Tonsil stones, which are whitish to yellowish spots that appear on your tonsils are a major cause of bad breath, and are caused by the buildup of bacteria of tiny food particles that do not get brushed or washed away. There are several different ways to prevent you from getting tonsil stones, but the two most important ones to follow is good oral hygiene and following a good diet. They may sound simple, but they are important to follow. By consuming too much of certain foods in your diet—such as alcohol, tobacco and dairy products are major inhibitors of the bacterial buildup and the cause of tonsil stones. By cutting back, or watching your intake of those things, and making sure you have plenty of fruits and vegetables will help strengthen your immune system, leaving it able to fight off the bacteria that may get left behind.

The other important one is good oral hygiene. By making sure you brush your teeth at least twice a day, and brushing your tongue as well, you are able to dislodge many food particles that can very easily get stuck in your teeth, which also can cause an odor in your mouth, and by doing this, you will be able to help keep your mouth bacterial free.

Another thing to think about is using a tongue scraper after brushing your teeth. You can also use your toothbrush to brush your tongue, however a tongue scraper can be more effective. By sticking your tongue all the way out and by scraping your tongue as far back as you can go, without gagging yourself, can remove any bacterial build up there may be. By adding a mouthwash or saltwater gargle at least one time each day, you can wash away, and kill any remaining bacteria build up.

These may seem simple, and they are, but it is important not to underestimate the importance of these. Having tonsil stones, although not physically harmful or dangerous, can be quite irritating and embarrassing for those who have it, and those who are around people who have it.
