Recently we had a mother cat have a litter of 5 kittens. The mother appeared to be chronically ill, and because she had turned somewhat feral the animal outreach center recommended we have her put down and the kittens because they assumed it was FIV, or leukemia, but when further tests were done at my vet she and the kittens turned out to be negative for all the standard tests they do for feline diseases. There may have been some inbreeding involved in the conception of these kittens, I am not sure if that plays a part in any of this. The mother eventually had to be put down because she was very ill, acting crazy (neurological) and her body was deteriorating (she also smelled very bad) it was very sad to see. The kittens were fine, I kept two a male and female. I kept them indoors, they were both very healthy at first but then the male ‘Neko’ started to be a little scrawnier than ‘Bebe’ his sister, slowly he became skinnier and skinnier, then started to act crazy running around suddenly into things uncontrollably (and jumping randomly into walls and mirrors), then he would sit and breathe really hard and I would try to calm him down, he would also brace himself and scratch us. Also his breath was very bad. I brought him in very concerned one morning to ‘animal outreach’ and the vet who was on duty told me her that if a cat like that came in who was feral, she would have to put it down. I felt so sorry for him at the time, but it seemed the most humane way for him to go out, instead of suffering. His sister lived outside for most of the day so I could keep them apart, she has been healthy for a good 6 months since he went down, but recently went into heat (worst i’ve ever seen a cat btw) and now afterward I am starting to see her act like ‘Neko’ did while he was sick. Its a strange distant look in their eyes, they are kind of frowning or something. They also get clumsy, and fall over/get claws hooked and stuck in things and have a hard time getting it out so I assume they are weak. Otherwise these cats appeared very healthy, and have excellent personalities, I have had many cats and these were both very good looking and well behaved cats I have ever seen. My vet tells me that there are viruses cats get you just can’t do anything about. I am confused though as to what this is that my cats have, its like they go crazy or kind of focus on something strange in their head and have a seizure or something. Bebe hasn’t shown any symptoms yet, but I’m getting her spayed soon (kind of late but had to wait for her to be out of ‘heat’) hopefully that may change something? Maybe she needs some shot? Is it distemper? They thought it was RABIES at the animal outreach, so they told me I needed to have it put down so they could test it. I thought since it was in such bad shape I had to do it, but regret the decision; it was my favorite cat! The other two cats I gave to a friend, one had an accident, and had apparently jumped into the dryer and hid (spare you the morbid details), the other, ‘Grobbulus’ is fine and a very handsome cat. If there are any cat mental illnesses that anyone has knowledge of please let me know about it. I have an older cat ‘Pusspuss’ who is seemingly unaffected by all this, he is a neutered male. Again, the cats came up negative for the diseases that they test for at the cat clinic and the vet told me that it was some strange ‘virus’. Is there something you can do for a cat like this? Is there feline schizophrenia? or dementia causing illnesses that can hit cats at any time in their lifespan? Anyone know?!? Hopefully if you have read this far you have some insight on the situation please let me know!
