How do I get rid of tonsil stones?
I get this little gross, foul smelling white balls that come out of the back of my throat. Its happened for years and I found out this year they are called “tonsil stones”. It is happening more frequently and I am starting to get bad breath. I brush my teeth 2 times a day, floss and use mouthwash sometimes. I removed two huge stones from my tonsils today with a cotton swap–and before I did that I noticed my tonsils are red. They do not hurt–but since I smelled my breath I know something had to be stuck in there.
Has anyone cured this?

My
name is Lesli Paterson, and welcome to my blog. I created this blog to
help other people like me who are suffering with tonsil stones.
Get your tonsils taken out. I work for an ENT surgeon and see this daily. Tonsils collect bacteria (reason for tonsillitis, etc) and the tonsil stones are broken down food particles. I used to get them all of the time as a child/teen/adult and at age 28 had my tonsils taken out and the stones are gone. However, once your tonsils are gone, the tonsil bed still remains and food particles can still get stuck in there so it’ always a good idea to gargle w/warm salt water every couple of days or so. Hope this helps!
the only way to cure it is to have a tonsillectomy.
you should go see an ENT (ear, nose, and throat dr) to discuss having your tonsils removed.
they’re actually called “materia alba” or, white matter. it’s basically the same plaque that collects on your teeth, but years ago you might have had tonsillitis or other infection that caused your tonsils to form little craters or holes and now all that gunk is collecting in there. i would try to gargle with the mouthwash. i have impeccable hygiene and i still get them! yes…you could have your tonsils removed…but…surgery just for that little inconvenience??
Tonsil stones can definitely lead to having bad breath (halitosis). The reason you develop bad breath when having tonsil stones is because the stones themselves are made up of various elements that smell (hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercapten). You have to remember that tonsil stones are the by-product of dead white blood cells, bacteria, and mucus. Just the sound of those three elements can make someone cringe.
If you ever had the pleasure of squeezing a tonsil stone between your fingers and breaking it open, you’ll know why I refer to them as smelling like “fart-bombs” sold in local joke stores. Some have referred to the smell as a cross between rotten eggs and vomit. The reason they smell so bad is because they contain hydrogen sulfide ( smells like rotten eggs) and methyl mercapten (smells like rotten cabbage).
The smell that is produced when a tonsil stone is broken is similar to the taste that you might experience in your mouth when tonsil stones are present or forming (chemical or metallic). It is also the same smell that others will experience when you talk to them. Removing tonsils tones, chewing gum and eating mints can only do so much, the idea is to get to the root of the problem.
When looking for the root of the problem, always start with diet and lifestyle. It has been said that a diet heavy in dairy or milk products can produce the right environment for tonsil stones to grow and prosper. If, however, you don’t consume much dairy, you may have a condition called post nasal drip.
Post nasal drip is when your nasal cavities over produce mucus and this over produced mucus goes down the back of your throat and typically will get lodged in the tonsil area, where it can slow down, get sticky, and become a feeding ground for tonsil stone causing bacteria.
The idea is to focus on preventing more tonsil stones from forming and by doing this you will eliminate all the other conditions which by themselves can cause bad breath ( post nasal drip)
I speak from experience, because I too have had tonsil stones and post nasal drip, so I understand exactly what you mean by the taste you are experiencing in your mouth.
