My
name is Lesli Paterson, and welcome to my blog. I created this blog to
help other people like me who are suffering with tonsil stones.
have your tonsils removed
contact a ears nose throat doctor a (ent doc)
Okay, my tonsils are swollen and have been for a while. But I dont spit anything out! What exactly are tonsil stones? I’ve done a fair amount of reading on tonsilitis and tonsils, because i may have to remove mine, and i’ve never some across what you’ve described.
Have you gone to a doctor? I would first suggest going to a doctor. He’ll probably put you on the discovery health channel for a medical mystery because I have never heard of this and I work on a ear nose throat floor at a hospital.
You’re question stood out to me because I have the same problem and I don’t tell most people that I do because they are disgusting. My siblings and I refer to them as “vomit rocks” because they are nauseating. I notice that I have alot when I have a throat infection, even a mild one. One of my doctor’s told me that they are food particles that get stuck on your tonsils. What helps me is antibiotics, not smoking and using mouthwash to gargle every day. I want my tonsils removed too, but they don’t do that anymore.
Just to back you up…they do exist! ANd here are some ideas….not sure what you have tried.
Most people swallow this material without ever noticing it, while it is still tiny. In those whose tonsils are large, however, the particles can lodge in the deep crypts, where they continue to grow. The enlarging lumps are called calculi of the tonsil, or tonsilloliths (tonsil stones). These stones are most common during adolescence.
Microscopic studies of these tonsilloliths have shown them to contain a combination of food particles, bacteria, oral debris, and white blood cells in a concentrically laminated pattern — rather like a pearl. Usually they are small gritty particles found in the center of soft, cheesy flecks. Sometimes, however, they become quite large, appearing as rough, yellow or gray, round stones. At times they reach an extraordinary size. Affected people usually have a history of repeated attacks of tonsillitis in earlier years.
Most people with calculi of the tonsils have no associated symptoms. In that case nothing need be done, except perhaps for brushing or scraping them out, as your daughter does. Gargling, refraining from eating during the 30 minutes before falling asleep, and careful oral hygiene may help minimize their formation.
For some people, however, the calculi can be quite bothersome, causing a constant foreign-body sensation, a chronic low-grade sore throat, recurrent episodes of tonsillitis persisting beyond childhood, or chronic bad breath.
Treatment consists of either removing the tonsils or removing the calculi. Troublesome large calculi that are not easily dislodged may need an ear, nose, and throat doctor to remove them. http://www.drgreene.com/21_568.html
Tonsil Stones don’t do any physical harm, and sporadically coughing them up doesn’t mean that there is anything wrong. However, they can be annoying and sometimes they are an indication that you have bad breath. Normally, Normally one does not do much for them, except gargle with hydrogen peroxide. A simple combination of drugs and nasal drops can effectively eliminate tonsil stones without unnecessary tonsil surgery. Plus, occasional use of a nasal spray helps neutralise the anaerobic sulfur-producing bacteria on contact. http://www.doctorndtv.com/topicsh/Tonsil%20stones.asp
The only sure-fire method for ridding yourself of this problem is to have your tonsils removed (tonsillectomy), but there are nonsurgical alternatives which you should certainly pursue before you ask an ENT to take out your tonsils:
– You could try gargling frequently with warm salt water (1 teaspoon of table salt mixed with one pint of water– gargle with about 1/4 cup of this mixture three times per day, after meals.)
– You could also gargle with a mouthwash called Alkalol, which is essentially salt water combined with a variety of natural aromatic extracts; some people prefer Alkalol to plain salt water. Most other commercial mouthwashes contain sugar or alcohol, which are pleasant-tasting but are, in the long run, fairly irritating if used frequently.
– There is a doctor in Los Angeles, Murray Grossan, who markets a water-jet device for “hosing down” the tonsils. Relative to gargling, this device provides a more aggressive technique for clearing out those nasty crypts.
– In the hopes of avoiding tonsillectomy, I will often put my patient on a long (3 to 4 week) course of antibiotics in the hope that this will allow the tonsils to “settle down” (become less inflamed.) I must admit that antibiotics are not a very effective cure for this problem. http://www.doctorhoffman.com/xlith.htm
As for the person who works for an ENT, I work in medical imaging, and I have heard of these stones……
