When can I get my tongue pierced after having a tonsillectomy?
So I just had my tonsils removed on the 12th, and was told by my mom I could get my tongue pierced after my surgery. I’m 19 and my recovery has been pretty difficult, but I started feeling much better today and hope things will continue to improve. This is my spring break, so I will be returning back to school this weekend and was hoping to get my tongue pierced Sunday or Monday which would be day 10 or 11 of recovery. Is this too soon? I’m worried about infection, but I also want to kill two birds with one stone. After having your tonsils removed you can’t smoke or drink for a while and same with having your tongue pierced. With being in college and all its hard not to do those things, so I’d rather not have to do it twice in a row. Any answers will help and thanks in advance ![]()
I know im risking infection, but what can happen? I know i would take excellent care of the piercing as I have several others and have taken very good care of them all. My throat obviously can’t get infected anymore since my tonsils and adenoids are gone, so are we just talking about my tongue getting infected? I just don’t see that happening with proper care and cleaning.

My
name is Lesli Paterson, and welcome to my blog. I created this blog to
help other people like me who are suffering with tonsil stones.
I would not suggest you get a tongue piercing so close to your tonsillectomy.
The body has been through a trauma by having an anesthetic and surgery.
Getting your tongue pierced will cause more trauma.
This will place your body at risk of infection because you are weakening it through the surgery THEN piercing.
If your tongue gets infected, the chances of you getting a throat infection where your tonsils were is high.
Tonsils are the largest lymph nodes in the body.
Lymph nodes fight infection.
These have of course been removed.
Don’t risk it.
Do it in about a month when your throat is healed, because right now it is not.
EDIT: Your tonsils can’t get infected of course because they have gone BUT your throat can still become infected on the surgical sites.
Even if you keep your piercing clean, the mouth is full of bacteria and germs.
Putting in a piercing puts strain on the body and the immune system. Your body is like this at the moment from the surgery. So the bacteria in the mouth that usually wouldn’t cause any harm, will do as it fights the foreign object in your mouth.
But ultimately is your body. I can tell you the risks but I can’t stop you.
I recommend about 6 months or else your throat will have eternal soreness.
After a operation it may take several of months to recover.
call your operating surgeon. if you get a nurse insist on speaking to a doc. i would say many months to be on the safe side and not risk infection.
i honestly don’t know if the timeline is a good idea or not , to get it so soon after the surgery
