why are my tonsils still swollen after 3 months and 3 rounds of antibiotics?
Back in early November, I caught a nasty cold and after it passed, I started having what felt like symptoms of a sinus infection or a bad attack of allergies. I was having dizzy spells and often felt like I was close to passing out, plus ringing in my ears. I knew that I had an impacted wisdom tooth and figured that this was the cause because I was also getting pain in my jaw where the tooth is. I soon began to develop swelling under my jaw and attributed this to my tooth.
When I saw my dentist, he assumed that these were all symptoms of my impacted tooth and referred me to an oral surgeon, as well as prescribing me 500 mg of amoxicillin. However, when I saw the oral surgeon, he told me that I didn’t have any infection that would be caused by the tooth, and that when he looked down my throat, he saw that my tonsils were swollen.
I opted to not have my tooth removed because the surgeon said there was no immediate need to and the pain I was feeling previously had stopped. I also stopped taking the antibiotics while I was about 7 days into the 10-day prescription, because I wasn’t sure I needed them. I do get tonsillitis about once a year or so, and I figured I had another case of it so I went to a dr.
I explained to the dr. that I’d taken 6 days of amox with no results, so she prescribed cipro. I took the entire course of cipro, only skipping 1 or 2 during a 10-day run. The cipro seemed to clear up the actual ‘sickness’, but my tonsils were still swollen and covered with white patches. That dr. also gave me tests for mono and strep, and both came back negative. I was also given a shot in my arm and I forget what exactly that was.
SO, I saw ANOTHER dr. who prescribed another round of 500mg amoxicillin, and after completing that, my swelling has gone down considerably, but my tonsils (especially my right one) are still swollen and I still have white patches. My throat doesn’t hurt, and as far as I know, the white patches aren’t smelling. I do feel like I’m getting an occassional low grade fever and I haven’t been sleeping well since the antibiotics are giving me raging insomnia. I also have pain down the side of my neck and around the area of the tonsil that is swollen the worst. I can’t afford a tonsillectomy, and can’t stand losing any more sleep as a result of the antibiotics. Does anyone know what could be going on? Sorry for the long description.
